What is OPD treatment or Outpatient Treatment?

OPD stands for the outpatient department. It does not require patients to be hospitalised. It is the one that requires normal doctor visits at a doctor’s chamber or clinic for availing a specific treatment. The treatment can be carried out by the medical practitioner in his/her own clinic.

Although Outpatient Department (OPD) Treatment may still look a lot similar to the daycare treatment, the actual point of difference between the two can be seen with the kind of hospitalisation required in either of the above cases. For example, in an OPD treatment, an individual is required to get the entire procedure done without having to be admitted to the hospital. However, in order to trigger a claim, in a daycare procedure, an individual is required to get admitted to the hospital no matter even if it is for a short duration. A good example of OPD here would be root canal treatment, which could be looked at and treated by routinely going to a dentist’s clinic and without needing to get admitted to a hospital.

What is a Day Care Treatment or Day Care Procedure?

Day care treatment is also called daycare procedure. It is a technically advanced treatment that can be completed within a few hours. It does not require the insured person to stay at the hospital for a long time. Also, this type of treatment or procedure does not require hospitalisation for 24 hours. A few day care procedures include dialysis, chemotherapy, tonsillectomy, cataract surgery, dental surgery (following an accident), and many others.

Similarity between OPD Treatment & Day Care Treatment

When a person opts for a health insurance policy with the OPD treatment feature or coverage, he or she undergoes treatment for their medical ailment for a short duration. The same goes for daycare treatment. It means both types of medical treatment take less time.
